не мисля, че съм особено компетентен, но все пак това си ми остава любимата метъл група. Невероятно, но само с една песен - Степинг Стоун. Един приятел ми я прати като малък и ми остана на харда няколко години, после се сетих за нея и не съм спрял да я слушам. Не че съм голям метъл, ама тая група ще ми остане в сърцето. (не ме псувайте, ама не се сдържах)

Anathema

Една много добра английска банда която може да се каже стартира заедно с Paradise Lost и My dying Bride, doom death жанра.

По принцип тези момчета свирят алтернативен рок и дуум метал. Формирани са през 1990 под името Pagan Angel и през ноември същата година издават първото си демо - An Iliad of Woes. Сменят името си през 1991. Това демо хваща вниманието на няколко други групи от английската метълска сцена и Анатема започва да свири с групи като Paradise Lost и Bolt Thrower.

Най-добрият им албум лично за мен е The Silent Enigma, а най добра песен Fragile Dreams.

Групата 1349 е създадена в Норвегия през 1997 година от вокалиста Ravn, китаристите Tjalve и Balfori и басиста Sidemann. Свирят предимно екстремен блек метъл. Една от любимите ми блек групички и напоследък, гледам започват да се популяризират все повече и повече. Чух ги преди известно време (не беше доста отдавна) и още след първата песен (The Usurper), си дръпнах цялата им дискография! Първото си демо издават през 1998 г., а второто (Chaos Preferred) - през 1999. През 2001 следва 1349, а 2003 година издават албума Liberation:

Стартират музикалната си кариера с два демо-албума, записани през 1994г. Това са The Seven Godesses of Frost и Bards Burial. Първият им албум е Sinner's Serenade от 1997.




Вторият им албум е Vilda Mбnnu (1998)


Силен албум, харесах го. Жанрово се определя като Death Metal, въпреки Trash елементите, вплетени в него.

За следващия им албум Chaotic Beauty (2000) не мога да говоря много, понеже ми липсват половината песни, но според мен и малкото, което имам, оправдава оценката от 89% в metal-archives.


Албумът от 2001г. A Virgin and a Whore е повратната точка в творчеството им. Те започват да свирят Symphonic Death Metal, каквато е жанровата им принадлежност и до днес. В A Virgin and a Whore най-добрите песни според мен са Aurora Borealis и Fall of a Man.


Последният им албум, поне засега, е Before the Bleeding Sun от 2006г. Той ми е фаворитът сред творчеството на Eternal Tears of Sorrow. В него се съдържат абсолютно задължителните за мен и за mp3-плеърът ми песни : Sweet Lilith of My Dreams (крайно символична песен) , Red Dawn Rising (която е най-добрата в творчеството им), Sinister Rain (дълбока песен. Буквално.)

Band name:Godsmack
In February of 1995, after being behind the drums for more than 23 years, Sully Erna decided to start a new band. It was only a matter of time before he realized he needed to take charge and step out from behind the kit to front the band himself.

One year and a couple of member changes later Godsmack was born. Sully Erna, Robbie Merrill and Tony Rombola hit the studio and recorded their first CD titled ALL WOUND UP. They did this over one weekend for a measly twenty six-hundred dollars.

Over the next two years, the band played throughout the Boston scene with drummer Joe Darco and began earning a strong reputation of being a great live band. The noise they were making in the New England area created a snowball effect like no other.

Godsmack began drawing in bigger and bigger audiences to their live shows. Their CD began circulating through the streets of Boston and eventually landed in the hands of a DJ for WAAF, a Boston radio station. WAAF put "Keep Away" into heavy rotation and it quickly soared to the #1 spot at the station. Newbury Comics, a New England record store chain, agreed to sell the CD on consignment and the grind continued.

Shortly after the success of "Keep Away" Godsmack went back into the studio and recorded a single titled "Whatever", which became the new local favorite on WAAF. It took off in the blink of an eye and the race was on.

As a result of the single doing so well, Godsmack's CD began selling hundreds of copies per week, and soon escalated to more than one thousand copies per week, becoming the second best selling CD in that chain of stores. Godsmack's live shows began selling out throughout New England, which in return created more requests for their music on the local radio stations and more CD sales. On and on it went until the summer of 1998 when Republic/Universal stepped up and signed the band to their label.

Joe Darco was soon replaced by Tommy Stewart, ALL WOUND UP was re-mastered and the artwork was changed. The finished self-titled debut CD GODSMACK hit the shelves 6 weeks later.

Godsmack hit the road on their first headlining tour, "The Voodoo Tour". The bands strong live performances, coupled with high record sales and growing number of fans, landed them time slots on Ozzfest 1999 and 2000, a European tour with Black Sabbath and an appearance at Woodstock 1999.


In 2000 Godsmack released their second CD, AWAKE. This album's title track dominated rock radio and broke chart records throughout 2000 and 2001. The CD's instrumental track "Vampires" earned the band its first Grammy nomination.

Godsmack toured AWAKE selling out arenas and outdoor venues nationwide. They gave their fans their moneys worth with a gothic stage, video and pyro; lots of pyro!


In 2002, Sully was asked to A&R the soundtrack for the motion picture "The Scorpion King", the third installment in the Mummy saga. The song Godsmack wrote and performed lived up to its title: "I Stand Alone" became the No. 1 single at Rock Radio and the most played Active Rock song in 2002 for 14 weeks straight.

After spending over four years on the road the band decided to take a break before heading back into the studio. It was during this break that Shannon Larkin, a friend of Sully's for 15 years, formerly of Wrathchild America, AMEN and Ugly Kid Joe, was asked to replace Tommy Stewart.

The new line up headed to Miami to write and record the bands third CD. FACELESS was released in April of 2003 and became the #1 selling record in America of that week. FACELESS also brought another tour that ran 23 months strong inlcuding two more Grammy nominations for "I Stand Alone" and an 11 month international arena tour with the kings of metal, Metallica!!

In March of 2004, Godsmack released their first acoustic EP, THE OTHER SIDE which included new versions of previous hits like "Keep Away", "Re-Align" and a haunting new version of the Navy's recruit song, "Awake"!

This also spawned a side tour of its own. Godsmack filled in breaks from the big stage with Metallica with intimate storytelling acoustic shows giving their fans the explanation behind the title, "The Other Side".

With rich velvet curtains, stone gargoyles and strings of Christmas lights illuminating theatres around the country, fans had a whole new experience of the true talents of this unique foursome. Stripped down to nothing, Godsmack continued to deliver one of the best acoustic performances of our time.


Godsmack ended 2004, and two CD cycles, with a nostalgic New Years Eve performance at the Hard Rock Café, in Orlando Florida.

During this amazing three hour performance, Godsmack rolled through just about every song in their catalog and a few well known cover songs.

Това засега ми е любимата група и очкавам новия им албум.Постарах се да напиша нещо .Дано темата не затъне.

Ммм Godsmack една от любимите ми групи, личните ми фаворити са I fucking hate you и Make me believe, някой да вземе да напише за Anorexia Nervosa че нещо нищо не намирам аз. Много добра идея.

Anorexia Nervosa.

Групата е създадена във Франция през 1995 година. Досега са издали четири албума, като аз имам два от тях - Drudenhaus и New Obscurantis Order, като се нагърбвам със задачата да кажа, че това са и най-добрите им албуми.
Drudenhaus (2000) определено е по-любимият ми албум, с него се сдобих първоначално. Дори това е една от първите блек метъл групи, които чух и останах много доволен от симфоничното звучене, защото бях свикнал с Боргир и Кредъл. Тази група обаче носи един наистина специален заряд - бързината. Да, колкото и странно да звучи, на тази група едно от предимствата е това. Макар да е типично за всички блек метъл групи, тук бързината комбинирана с невероятните симфонични композиции, които прави Neb, създава една агресивна и същевременно доста мелодична атмосфера. Великолепен албум, който винаги слушам с огромно удоволствие. Вокалите тук също са на доста високо ниво, като се има предвид, че Hreidmarr е един от вокалистите в този стил, които най-много уважавам. :) Не за друго, а заради начина, по който си съдира гърлото от крещене. Дори не крещене ами напълно пищене. Чудесно е. :)
New Obscurantis Order (2001) e другият албум и всъщност чух групата с една песен от него - Chatiment de la Rose. Именно тук ме завладяха прелестните композиции, които прави Neb, защото това ми е любимата част от музиката на групата. Трябва да се чуе, по-добро е от Боргир дори. :) Някой път имам чувството че тази част точно е била дадена да се направи от някой реномиран композитор на класическа музика. Поразително добре се вмъкват и тук бързината и агресивността на блек метъла и мелодичността на класическата част. Депресанстски звучи на места, но това е типично. А и е хубаво. :)
Та, толкова мога да напиша за тая група, лични впечатления само, спестих сухите факти и биографични данни. Другите два албума нямам, но ако някой ги е слушал нека да постне и мнение за тях. Предполагам, че няма да се различава особено от другите два, защото разликата в атмосферата, която групата създава в предните два, е почти минимална. Любими песни:
От Drudenhaus:
The Drudenhaus Anthem - интрото на песента е уникално. Точно това ме плени още отначало. Това е песента показваща лицето на групата най-добре, мисля. Симфоничен бърз и агресивен блек метъл. Текста се сменя на места на френски, иначе Храйдмар пищи на английски.
A Doleful Night In Thelema и Dirge & Requiem For My Sistee Whore също като горната, заслужават да се чуят пред останалите, но това е поне според мен, щото са ми най-любимите. :)
От New Obscurantis Order:
Chatiment de la Rose и Stabbat Mater Dolorosa, а също така и Mother Anorexia. Аз между песните в този албум много разлика не успявам да намеря, все е тресня, но това не значи че не струват, напротив. Всичко е изключително ценно. Толкоз с моите знания за тази група. Някой, ако иска, да допълва.

Ще допълня само , че албума Redemption Process от 2004, който е и последен, е също ужасно добър. Малко по-мелодичен и изпипан. Звучи и малко по-плътно. Заради барабаните е Иначе вокалите на бат ви Храйдмар също порят, даже на места твърде много врещи, но нема лошо

А сега искам да обърнем внимание на една друга значителна група.
Иде реч за поляците Behemoth



Някъде в средата на 1991 год. Nergal ( Adam Darski ) , силно надъхан от групи като Venom и други от Норвежката блек метъл сцена създава една група, която до ден днешен продължава да ми е любимата сред black/death metal-а.

През първите 2 години от началото на съществуването си правят записи в чисто примитивна блек форма:
Endless Damnation през '92 , The Return of the Northern Moon през следващата, а през 1993 излиза култовото заглавие From the Pagan Vastlands , което включва и кавър на Mayhem-ската Deathcrush.
Чисто блек звучене, адски надъхани и в разцвета на силите си показват на света, че не само Севера може да ражда добър блек метъл. За кратко време се превръщат в една от малкото източни групи с огромен потенциал и хъс.

Следва първият им дългосвирещ албум Sventevith (Storming Near The Baltic) през 1995.
Отново първично злобно блек звучене.

Следва 'трашърския' албум Grom през '96. Вкарват доста траш елементи, наистина. Чуйте песни като Rising Proudly Towards the Sky(която ми е и любимата от албума) и ще чуете за какво говоря. Доста 'боен' и енергичен албум с ужасно злоба и хъс, ест.

През следващата година излиза един сплит и EP-то Bewitching The Pomerania, които не могат да се похвалят с кой знае каква идейност и нови елементи. Отново блекарии

През 1998 издават дългосвирещия Pandemonic Incantations и тотално изневеряват на първичното и злобно блек звучене заменяйки го с нов твърд, плътен дет-траш саунд. Любима песен от там - In Thy Pandemaeternum. Вокалите обаче все още клонят към блек, което придава едно уникално звучене.

От 1999 година групата започва да навлиза в чисто дет метъл звучене. Единствено вокалите на Нергал продължават да навяват спомени за блек периода на групата
През '99 излиза Satanica. Албумът ще се запомни с емблематичната им песен Decade Of Therion. Фаворит.

На следващата година вече се радваме на Thelema.6. Поредният прекрасен албум. Няма слаба песен от него. Включва и някои бонус тракове, ремастерирани стари ... Агресията е на 6 ...

Поредният дългосвирещ албум е факт през 2002 и се зове Zos Kia Cultus. Звученето е горе-долу като в предишния албум. Агресия, бързина, тежък саунд, плътни дълбоки вокали и страхотни композиции. Отново албум без слаба песен.

През 2003 издават едно EP на име Conjuration , което включва лайвове и кавър на NiN ( Wish ) и Venom ( Welcome to Hell ) ... прекрасни кавъри, между другото

Следва първото DVD на групата Crush.Fukk.Create: Requiem for Generation Armageddon , което включва видеография , лайвове, интервюта, екстри и т.н.

През 2004 излиза бруталния албум Demigod. Отново тежко и агресивно звучене, вокалите са по-дълбоки от всякога , вкарани са и ефекти, които допринасят за атмосферата. Най-добрия албум с чисто дет метъл звучене, доближаващо се по тежест може би до Nile.

На другата година излиза EP-то Slaves shall serve включващо 2 лайва , една неиздадена песен и кавъри на Danzig и Fields Of Nephilim.

Предстои да излезе един boxed set , който ще има за цел да събере на едно място най-доброто на групата от блек метъл периода им. Може би догодина ще излезе и такъв, който ще включва от death-a

Нарочно пропуснах да давам снимки, защото става малко объркващо и се накъсва писаницата
За всичките години през групата минават доста музиканти, но винаги движеща сила е бил Nergal - вокали и китара.
В момента с останалата част са се заели :
Inferno - барабани
Orion - бас
Seth - китара

Интересното е, че са преминали през и са изразили чрез музиката си накуп и Паганизъм , Телемата и отчасти Сатанизма. От друга страна огромна част от творчеството им е свързано с древните култури. Из нещата, за които се говори в текстовете им няма да видите типични за повечето дет метъл групи тематики, а именно : ''кръв, сеч, трупове, червеи, говна , зомбита ''. Заслугата може би е донякъде е на Krzysztof Azarewicz

Мен лично групата ме грабна с уникалното си звучене, отличаващо я от повечето 'обикновени' групи. По-любим ми е дет метъл периода, в който намерих доста любими заглавия като Decade of Therion, Vinum Sabbati, As Above So Below, Demigod, The Reign of Shemsu-Hor, Conquer All.

Някой може ли да напише и нещичко за Ramsstein,които също ме кефят но не намирам нищо за тяхната биография?

Копеле, не трябваше да споменаваш Rammstein...С тяхното име и звучене свързвам,много важна част от живота си! Именно влюбването си в Метъл музиката.

Та, Rammstein са най-стабилната (очаквам включване) група от немски произход.Тяхното звучене не бих го нарекъл точно метъл,но да го приемем за такова заради интереса Ти към тях,Принце(;...Просто,използват малко повечко electro-style елементи.Според мен Rammstein и Korn са групите, чието звучене най-лесно те приобщава към Метъл музиката.Някакси са по-смилаеми и служат за преход към истинското метъл звучене.Аз,лично не познавам човек,който да да е слушал Рам и да не се е зарибил и по Метъла.

Ето малко факти:

Rammstein сформирани през 1994 година от Richard Zven Kruspe ,Oliver "Ollie" Riedel и Christoph "Doom" Schneider .Групата е от немски произход,като изпълнителите идват от бишата Източна Германия.Името им идва от от немският град Ramstein,в който през 1988 година се разиграва трагична катастрофа на авио-шоу,която взима невинни жертви.Допълнителното "m" в името, е с цел придобиване на значението "стенобитно оръдие" и обрисуване на мощната музика,която бандата твори.

В сегашният си вид групата е със следните членове:

По-принцип Рам-а нямат слаби песни(никой не е перфектен),но която и песен тяхна да чуете,няма да се разочаровате!
Силно ви препоръчвам албумите Herzeleid(1996) и Sehnsucht(1998)! Задължително чуйте Asche Zu Asche и Der Meister за да усетите моща на китарата на Г-н Kruspe и здравият и мощен вокал на Till. Чрез баладите им Ohne Dich и Amour от албумът им Reise Reise ще се насладите на мелодичност,която няма аналог на своята красота и нежност с друга немска песен(субективно мнение)...

Та, няма да сгрешите ако послушате добрите стари Rammstein, и тяхното нео метълско звучене с лек привкус на индъстриъл и хард рок (baby)... Абе,всъщност,има ли някой,който да не ги е слушал ?!(;

Blutengel

Blutengel e основана от Chris Pohl през 1998 година, след като той се отказва от предишния си проект Seelenkrank. Точно като своите предшественици (вече споменатите Seelenkrank), стилът, който свирят Blutengel e доста странен, но и впечатляващ в същото време. Групата използва мелодични електронни мотиви в комбинация с мъжки и женски вокали. Текстовете на песните им се отнасят до всички страни на любовта.

Първият албум на Blutengel, наречен "Child of Glass" ("Стъклено дете") излиза в началото на 1999 година. През следващите няколко месеца съставът печели много фенове, като влиза в сърцата им завинаги . Парчетата, с чиято помощ Blutengel печелят много от първите места на класациите са "Weg zu mir" ("Пътят към мен") и "Beauty of Suffering" ("Страдаща красота"). Изпълняваще женските вокали в групата са Kati Rolof и Nina Bendigkeit. Въпреки целият този успех, Blutengel спират дейност за близо 2 години, незнайно защо, но през 2001 година се връщат с гръм и трясък заедно с новата си тава, наречена "Seelenschmerz" ("Душевна болка")

С излизането на този албум Blutengel поставят основите на нова ера в тяхната кратка история. Nina Bendigkeit напуска състава и за втори женски вокал постъпва Gini Martin. Едноименната песен "Seelenschmerz", както и "Der Spiegel" ("Огледало"), "Soul of Ice" ("Ледена душа") и "Children of the Night" ("Деца на нощта") превръщат албума в блокбъстър, а също така изтрелват Blutengel отново на челните позиции в чартовете, като единствения пропуск е Германската Топ 100 класация за албуми. Следва поредица от турнета, с които групата печели фенските сърца за пореден път. На 1 юни 2001 Blutengel са удостоени с честта да оглавяват със своята музика концерта Wave-Gotik-Treffen проведен в Лайпциг пред близо десетхилядна публика. След още два концерта и след издаването на сингъла "Black Roses" ("Черни рози") групата "удря на камък" в края на 2001 година, и след още едно представление (The Dark Storm Festival) на 26 декември 2001, Blutengel oтново обявяват прекратяване на своето съществуване.

Constance Rudert, която била повикана в състава преди време, за да вземе участие в "Black Roses", отново се появява заедно с Blutengel през 2002 година, когато заедно изнасят едно мини-представление в небезизвестен казино клуб в Берлин. Естествено за това си изпълнение те получават и солиден хонорар . Няколко месеца по-късно Kati и Gini напускат групата, за да продължат своите кариери, чрез създаването на общ проект ("Tristesse De La Lune"). Chris Pohl привлича Constance Rudert в Blutengel окончателно, като вика за нейна партньорка и Eva Poelzig. И ето, че Blutengel отново "възкръсват". Списания като Orkus Zillo и Sonic Seducer правят впечатляващи ревюта на новия албум, като само помагат на Blutengel за трети, пореден път, да завладее немските класации.

Blutengel изнасят успешни турнета в Швейцария, Холандия и разбира се Германия, още преди да са влезли в топ 100 класациите. Чисто доказателство, че популярността на Blutengel е нарастнала значително от 1999 година. По време на следващите си големи концерти в Западна Европа Blutengel изнасят впечатляващи представления, не става дума само за музика Страхотни танцове, измислени специално за техните песни, впечатляващи пиротехнически ефекти, дори три пълни балетни програми за песните "Black Wedding" ("Черна сватба"), "Angel of the Night" ("Ангел на нощта"), "The End of Love" ("Краят на любовта"), зрелищни "кланета" по време на изпълненията.

През 2003 година Blutengel участват в няколко фестивала - Wave-Gotik-Treffen, Woodstage Festival, Mera Luna festival, The Electric Gathering Festival в Швеция, The Dark Storm Festival в Berlin, както и на Oberhausen партнирайки си с групата "Within Temptation". Декември 2003 най-накрая излиза и дългоочакваният сингъл Forever ("Завинаги").
Март 2004 излиза новият албум, носещ името "Demon Kiss" ("Демонична целувка"), който постига огромен успех, равняващ се с този и на предишния албум. Следват отново доста участия във фестивали в Гърция, Швеция, Норвегия и Германия. През април 2005 излезе и DVD-то, показващо всички участия на Blutengel след излизането на "Demon Kiss".

Mалко по-късно, отново през 2005 година с Blutengel се разделя Eva Poelzig. Chris Pohl отново се впуска в "издирване" на нова партньорка на Constance, и в крайна сметка удря с един куршум два заека (упс, две зайки, грешка ). Към състава се присъединяват Ulli Goldmann и Sonja. Третият женски вокал на Sonja придава ново, доста по-добро звучене на групата. Идва ред и на албум - "The Oxidising Angel" ("Oтровен ангел") (2005), който не остава по-назад по качество от предшествениците си. По последни слухове Blutengel се трудят по нов албум, но същевременно вокалът Chris Pohl взема дейно участие и в друг проект - Тerminal Choice, така че бъдещето на Blutengel ще е повече от интересно.

Групата е създадена в Норвегия през 2002 година. Една от сравнително новите групи, но изградили свое собствено звучене. В превод от норвежки lja означава коса (за косене...).

Единствения албум на групата е озаглавен Til Avsky for Livet и е издаден в началото на тази (2006) година. Преди това имат и няколко демота, но за жалост не съм успял да се докосна до тях, а единствено до една-единствена песен - Skamslеtte engler. Една наистина страхотна песен за демо период на група. Епична, със страхотни рифове и типичната за минималистичния норвежки блек метъл продукция - сурова.
Til Avsky for Livet е албума, за който ще говоря по-обстойно. Всъщност, откриването на албума става с една от най-невероятните блек метъл песни, които някога съм чувал - Til Satan. Още отначало мелодичните и агресивни рифове ще ви поведат на едно пътешествие. Точно агресивността е нещото, което групата успява да запази през цялото време, докато слушам албума. Нататък песента продължава с изкъртване на касите от страна на барабаниста, който кърти мивки. Бързи барабани, типични за този стил музика. И все пак нещо се откроява, като сравним групата с останалите. Нещо е наред. Да, точно, нещо е наред. Всичко си стои на мястото, рифовете наистина звучат зли, както трябва, това е блек метъл в най, най, най, най, НАЙ (!) чистата си форма. Останалите песни запазват духа на Til Satan, като тя ми се отроява като любима именно заради страхотните рифове в интрото на песента. Повеждат ви в една битка. Трудно ми е да опиша колко съм шашнат от групата, макар и да има само един издаден албум. Ако не забравя, ще кача точно Til Satan, за да чуят желаещите що е то истински блек метъл. Това е от мен за тази група.

fuckin' Meshuggah

Шведите открай време си ги знаем, че правят, къде в добрия, къде в по-обезпокоителния смисъл, побъркана музика. Мешугите обаче издигат тази почетна квалификация до нови висоти. Музиката им е същинско научно чудо и е изсвирена така, че да ти се забие като тирбушон в черепа и да облъчи мозъка ти на всяко възможно ниво. Как се постига това? С уникален, неподчинен на каквито и да е музикални закони за тоналност, хармония, тактове и времеви сигнатури плътен пулсиращ звук, към какъвто Tool примерно открито признават, че се стремят. Барабаниста Tomas Haake има здравословния навик да свири едновременно две напълно различни дръм партии съответно с ръце и крака, които, комбинирани с плътно следващите ритъм секцията дисонантни, злокобни, ревящи осем(8)струнни китари-чудовища на Fredrik Thordendal и Marten Hagstrom и дрезгавите, механични вокали на Jens Kidman създават една изключително натрапчива и наситена с напрежение звукова платформа. За да се вкара музиката на Мешуга в някакви жанрови рамки все пак, групата прави преход от траш-насочен метъл (албумите до Chaosphere '98) към по-репетативен и груб groove метъл (това го свиреха Pantera, в случай, че гледаш тъпо) в последните си творения. Любопитен факт около групата е, че въпреки очевидния си музикален талант, Мешугите не се взимат никак насериозно и с удоволствие позират с възможно най-неадекватните гримаси (off: за гримаса, виж в O RLY темата, първата снимка на Xayzer) по време на фотосесии, както и проявяват солидно чувство за хумор в интервюта. И ако не ти се е изяснило вече какво мозъчно сътресение са тия шведи Meshuggah, вземи изгледай клипа на New Millenium Cyanide Christ. As good as na maika ti pitkata, дет се вика.

Biography

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s; one of the first acts to establish a musical identity based completely around the use of synthesizers, Depeche Mode began their existence as a bouncy dance-pop outfit but gradually developed a darker, more dramatic sound that ultimately positioned them as one of the most successful alternative bands of their era.

The roots of Depeche Mode dated to 1976, when Basildon, England-based keyboardists Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher first teamed to form the group No Romance in China. The band proved short-lived, and by 1979 Clarke had formed French Look, another duo featuring guitarist/keyboardist Martin Gore; Fletcher soon signed on, and the group rechristened itself Composition of Sound. Initially, Clarke handled vocal chores, but in 1980 singer David Gahan was brought in to complete the lineup; after one final name change to Depeche Mode, the quartet members jettisoned all instruments excluding their synthesizers, honing a slick, techno-based sound to showcase Clarke's catchy melodies.

After building a following on the London club scene, Depeche Mode debuted in 1980 with "Photographic", a track included on the Some Bizarre Album label compilation. After signing to Mute Records, they issued "Dreaming of Me" in early 1981; while neither the single nor its follow-up, "New Life", caused much of a stir, their third effort, "Just Can't Get Enough", became a Top Ten U.K. hit, and their 1981 debut LP, Speak and Spell, was also a success. Just as Depeche Mode appeared poised for a major commercial breakthrough, however, principal songwriter Clarke abruptly exited to form Yazoo with singer Alison Moyet, leaving the group's future in grave doubt.

As Gore grabbed the band's songwriting reins, the remaining trio recruited keyboardist Alan Wilder to fill the technological void created by Clarke's departure; while 1982's A Broken Frame deviated only slightly from Depeche Mode's earlier work, Gore's ominous songs grew more assured and sophisticated by the time of 1983's Construction Time Again. Some Great Reward, issued the following year, was their artistic and commercial breakthrough, as Gore's dark, kinky preoccupations with spiritual doubt ("Blasphemous Rumours") and psychosexual manipulation ("Master and Servant") came to the fore; the egalitarian single "People Are People" was a major hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and typified the music's turn toward more industrial textures.

Released in 1986, the atmospheric Black Celebration continued the trend toward grim melancholy, and further established the group as a major commercial force. After the superb single "Strangelove", Depeche Mode issued 1987's Music for the Masses; a subsequent sold-out tour yielded the 1989 double live set 101, as well as a concert film directed by the legendary D.A. Pennebaker. Still, despite an enormous fan base, the group was considered very much an underground cult phenomenon prior to the release of 1990's Violator, a Top Ten smash that spawned the hits "Enjoy the Silence", "Policy of Truth" and "Personal Jesus".

With the alternative music boom of the early '90s, Depeche Mode emerged as one of the world's most successful acts, and their 1993 LP Songs of Faith & Devotion entered the charts in the number one slot. However, at the peak of its success, the group began to unravel; first Wilder exited in 1995, and then Gahan was the subject of a failed suicide attempt. (He later entered a drug rehabilitation clinic to battle an addiction to heroin.) After a four-year layoff, Depeche Mode -- continuing on as a trio -- released 1997's Ultra, which featured the hits "Barrel of a Gun" and "It's No Good". A year later, the band embarked on a tour in support of The Singles 86>98 greatest-hits album. Depeche Mode played 64 shows in 18 countries for over a million fans. It also marked the end of a decade for the band. Each member took some considerable time off, and Depeche Mode would not regroup for another three years.

Exciter, the band's follow-up to 1997's Ultra, was released in 2001. Singles such as "Dream On" and "I Feel Loved" did moderately well. Two years later, Gahan issued his debut solo album, the dark and sultry Paper Monsters. Gore also followed suit by issuing his debut full-length, Counterfeit. Each member did respective tours of the U.S. and Europe; however, it wouldn't be long until Depeche Mode came back together. Playing the Angel became a Top Ten hit upon release in October 2005, produced by Ben Hillier (Doves, Blur, U2, Elbow).
