GameplayThe World Map has been Updated and is now 3d, corresponding with a more nonlinear campaign. This world map uses the same engine as the "local map" used in the majority of the game, although the scale is different. Random encounters appear on the map, which the characters can either avoid (using skills such as Move Silently to delay the NPC reaction time) or engage. Upon engagement, a dialog window appears, allowing the character to choose their reaction -- most hostile targets will merely have fight or flee, while more neutral targets will have more civilized options.
Players will use previously "useless" skills such as Spot and Survival while on the world map to avoid ambushes and find special events, similar to the Fallout series of games. Examples given are of a party with a character with a high listen discovering a hissing box in the middle of nowhere, or a party with a high disable device discovering a trap, that they can then disable and resell the components.
Players will create the primary four members of the party, although NPCs, called cohorts, may also join, and the character can swap out the four members of the party for other player-created characters at any tavern.[6] This is similar to a previous game by Black Isle Studios, Icewind Dale. In addition, intra-party dynamics have been improved: The NPC dialogue system has been updated, allowing the player to change who is talking with NPCs on the fly, allowing players to switch to characters with different skills, races, or classes to exploit NPC reactions to this. In addition, new benefits including feats are available that affect party play.
The NPC economy has been made dynamic. This directly ties in to the storyline, as the player characters run a merchant empire in the game. Through quests and barter, your PC's merchant guild will grow in wealth and influence. Several NPC trading guilds are competing for as much resources as they can find in the area.NWN2:SoZ foreshadows some of the changes in the 4th Edition version of the Forgotten Realms.
Gameplay will be focused on mid-level gameplay, so the level cap has not been changed from level 30.
RacesStorm of Zehir features all of the races from Neverwinter Nights 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, as well as introducing several new ones. Two that have been confirmed are the Gray Orc and Yuan-ti Pureblood.
* Gray Orc - A more civilized version of the common Orc, albeit still violent and prone to instinctual outbursts.
* Yuan-ti Pureblood - The "infiltrator" caste of the Yuan-ti, these evil humanoids appear mostly human, except for slight reptilian features that are easily hidden.
ClassesSimilarly, Interviews with Atari and Obsidian have reported new Classes are in the works for Storm of Zehir, however little information has been released about this. The three that have been confirmed are the Swashbuckler base class and the Hellfire Warlock and Doomguide prestige classes.
* Swashbuckler - The Swashbuckler is a base melee class that emphasizes dexterity over strength. It is similar to using a fighter with Weapon Finesse, but contains several distinct advantages over fighters.
* Hellfire Warlock - A prestige class for Warlocks that take brimstone blast, this prestige class focuses on amplifying the Warlocks fire based attacks by giving them a new unresistable Hellfire Blast, as well as giving the warlock the ability to create a hellfire shield and enchanting items with hellfire based effects. Due to the Warlocks item crafting feats being removed after the first NWN2 patch, it is unknown if the item crafting aspect will end up in NWN2:SoZ.
* Doomguide - A type of prestige class for divine spellcasters. In the original pen and paper ruleset, Doomguides were a specific type of prestige cleric of Kelemvor, the god of the dead; however, these deity specific requirements were removed for Neverwinter Nights 2. However, in a recent post on the official forums, Obsidian has announced that upon taking one level of Doomguide, the character's chosen deity changes into Kelemvor. Doomguides focus on anti-undead and melee abilities.
